Passers-by saw meters of waste floating in the Albert Canal in Hasselt this afternoon. “For minutes I saw hundreds of plastic packaging, garbage bags, doughnuts, meat scraps, sandwiches and other things pass by”, says Toon Eerdekens of non-profit organization ‘PlastiekBevluchtingVlaanderen’ who happened to pass by. “I also heard other passers-by say how terrible this is. Let’s hope that the city of Hasselt or the police do something about it.”

“I saw that dirt pass by and immediately made the link with Pukkelpop,” says Toon. “Maybe this is an entrepreneur who couldn’t get rid of his surpluses? That is of course difficult to prove, but it was a lot of waste and food scraps that I saw passing by.” Toon Eerdekens shared the images on social media and hopes to attract the attention of the city of Hasselt and the police. “Although I don’t know if they will do anything about it. I have also been fighting for years against the plastic waste that remains in the streets after carnival and nothing is being done about it.”
