The advisory also said the concentration of droplets and aerosols was lower in open spaces, and the chances of the virus spreading significantly decreased in well-ventilated spaces.
Amid the growing spread of the coronavirus in the country, the central government said in a notice that the disease can be transported by air as well as in aerosols and by people contracted up to 10 meters away. The advisory incorporated growing evidence in different parts of the world that the virus can be spread by air and especially by air in confined spaces, the Indian Express reported.
New meaning of the discovery
Previously, the virus was believed to be spread from one infected person to another using droplets emitted when the infected person sneezes, coughs or speaks without a face mask. It was generally believed that the droplets, before finally falling to the ground, could travel up to 2 meters (6 feet) and that an equivalent physical distance between two individuals could keep the virus at bay. However, with more research on the disease, scientists have expressed fears that the disease is also spread by aerosols that help droplets travel long distances and survive in the air for several minutes or even hours.
What does the new notice add?
The advisory says the disease can spread from one infected person to another, even up to a distance of 10 meters, and droplets released by an infected person can travel up to 10 meters using aerosols. The advisory says aerosols and droplets emitted by infected patients remain the main source of disease transmission. In addition, the notice also states that surface transmission of the coronavirus also cannot be ruled out, as droplets descending on different surfaces can be picked up by people. Initially thought to be a major cause of the rapid spread of the disease, contact with the surface is not considered a major factor in the spread of the virus at present.
Precautions to keep the virus away
Proper ventilation of an indoor space through windows and doors as well as the use of exhaust systems can significantly reduce the spread of disease. In the absence of adequate ventilation, aerosols and droplets carrying the virus become concentrated and increase the chances of contracting the disease. The advisory also said the concentration of droplets and aerosols was lower in open spaces, and the chances of the virus spreading significantly decreased in well-ventilated spaces.
