After the issuance of an arrest warrant for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin by the International Criminal Court, a big behind-the-scenes diplomatic battle over respect for the Rome Statute will begin.
“Now a big behind-the-scenes diplomatic battle will begin for respect for the Rome Charter. Here, the question is not even Putin or Ukraine, but that if they openly disregard the ICC warrant, this will ruin the ICC,” Kuleba said.
Therefore, according to the minister, the International Criminal Court itself is interested in observing its acts. In addition, all countries supporting the ICC will join this battle to enforce the warrant.
“It is clear that South Africa will not refuse Putin’s visit, because it is their ally. But, to ignore, I do not think that South Africa will be able to openly and defiantly ignore him … It is better to fight attempts not to fulfill the order than to fight to such a warrant was issued,” Kuleba said.
