This is not a traditional and mandatory crash test, but one of the safety procedures of the Mercedes car company. He passes similar tests three times a day and up to 900 times a year! The brand decided to go public with the freshest to show what a clash of two electric SUVs might look like in real traffic. And in the model portfolio, it chose two opposites – the huge EQS SUV versus the EQA urban crossover.
Mandatory Euro NCAP tests require a frontal impact with a 1,400kg “cart” whose front aluminum barrier simulates the front of another car. Mercedes sent two real cars against each other – the EQS and EQA go at a speed of 56 km/h, while the Euro NCAP measurement for awarding stars requires a speed equal to 50 km/h.
According to Mercedes data, this is a very common scenario of a traffic accident, when the driver does not estimate the overtaking maneuver and collides with an oncoming car with a 50% overlap. And the result? Although we would not want to try it on our own skin, it is actually very good! “The cars look terrible, but the passengers are safe,” Mercedes safety chief Paul Dick commented on the test.
Analysis after the crash test shows that the four mannequins (three women and one man, each wearing 150 sensors) showed only a very low risk of serious, even fatal, injury. The airbags worked perfectly, as did the seat belt pre-tensioners. In addition, the doors of the cars could still be opened after the impact, so the so-called “safety cell” also served its purpose.
In the case of the crash test of electric cars, we were understandably interested in how the batteries fared. Mercedes did not forget to mention its rigid protective frame, reinforced cables and other additional protection, thanks to which there were no further complications during the test. The high-voltage system was already disconnected at the time of the collision.

“This test proved that all our vehicles have the same high level of safety, regardless of the technology that drives them,” praised Mercedes technology chief Markus Schäfer.
The security ambitions of the Silver Arrows are not small at all. The brand believes that by 2030 it will be able to reduce the number of fatal traffic accidents in Mercedes cars to half the number from 2020. But it does not end there either. “Our goal by 2050 is zero accidents in Mercedes-Benz cars,” concluded Schäfer. As bold as the plan is, we give a huge thumbs up for increasing the safety of all cars. We just hope we never have to see her in person.
