One of the campaign promises of Javier Milei, president-elect, is that the deficit cut will be paid for by politicians and not by the rest of society. This was an initiative supported by Together for Changeto the point that the national representative for Tucumán Paula Omodeo proposed that the salaries of the Chamber of Deputies for one year after having received increases of 800%.
The leader announced on her X account: «This week, I presented in the Chamber of Deputies a project to freeze the allowances of national deputies for one year. How is it possible that 6 out of 10 children live below the poverty line? “While we have uncontrolled public spending, which exceeds State revenue and has fueled inflation for many years that has bled the country,” she said.
«The measures have to be drastic and the first adjustment of all has to be made by politics. As deputies, we have the moral obligation to start by adjusting our diets,” added the Together for Change deputy, who also focused specifically on her province, where she also denounced institutional problems.
In this regard, he asked “to be even firmer” in Tucumán and attacked: “We cannot continue with the same rules of the game. Public spending is not going to seriously decrease and conditions are not going to change as long as the Constitution and the electoral system are not reformed,” questioned the official, who has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2021.
How much did the salaries of deputies increase?
The deputies’ allowances were for years a mystery to society, but Javier Milei, who entered the Lower House in 2021, raffled off month by month what he received from politics. His first transfer was 205,000 pesos, which at that time was already a good salary and was beneficial for the citizen who won.
However, his diet for November 2023, that is, two years later, was 1,760,000 pesos, which represents an increase of 800% in just 24 months, a period in which inflation accumulated 328.44%. Thus, the political class beat the increase in general prices by more than double, a trend well above the rest of society.
