A degraded space in the San José neighborhood is transformed into a new garden area

Salamanca City Council continues to transform degraded spaces into garden areas to make them healthier and more enjoyable by families in the city’s neighborhoods. Following the guidelines of Savia, the Green Infrastructure Strategy, this week the refurbishment of a 600-square-meter space began at the confluence of Via Helmántica with Joaquín Rodrigo Street, in the San José neighborhood.

The works contemplate the planting of 86 specimens of oleander and 460 of ivy, species that provide showiness in their summer flowering. In addition, the rest of the areas are covered with organic mulch that favors the conservation and increase of nutrients to the land, as well as the increase of biodiversity. The area will also be equipped with an automated irrigation network to guarantee the necessary water supply to the planted species and their correct development.

In this way, an area without specific use becomes a space of greater ornamental value for its integration into the surrounding gardens, where the Salamanca City Council already undertook an improvement of the area at the beginning of the current mandate. Specifically, the removal of an architectural barrier towards Calle Maestro Guridi with the construction of a ramp to facilitate access for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, and the installation of irrigation in this garden area on Calle Joaquín Rodrigo.

It should also be remembered that in front of the Salamanca City Council it has built a heated swimming pool and improved the accesses to the Río Tormes pavilion, as well as enabled a bike path that connects the San José neighborhood with the rest of the city’s cycling network and with Carbajosa de la Sagrada through the El Montalvo industrial estate.
