Geologist Herman Dario Bermúdez – who spent the last year in Texas, Alabama and Mississippi studying notable rock formations that still show faults and fissures likely from the extinction event – believes this new dataset complements his findings for the southern hemisphere in 2014.
While on the Colombian island of Gorgonella, Bermúdez found deposits of globules – also known as rock layers that contain tiny glass beads – among other evidence of a massive earthquake. These pearls were the result of the asteroid’s heat and pressure melting into the Earth after the impact, ejecting melted droplets into the atmosphere, which landed on the planet like glass due to gravity.
Fragments called “tektites” and “microtikiti” have also been found, thrown to Earth by the asteroid.
The stable Colombian rocks are thought to “tell a story from the bottom of the ocean”, particularly at a depth of about two kilometers. Bermudez found that millions of years old layers of mud and sandstone are still preserved in the current outcrop due to the vibrations of the impact.
“It’s one of the best preserved places and it was on the ocean floor, so it wasn’t affected by the tidal waves,” he said.
Just above these deposits were preserved spores of ferns which also indicated the first recovery of plant life after the impact of the asteroid.
Bermúdez also documented evidence of a large-scale tsunami caused by the impact.
