The Pope calls a day for peace on Friday 27 October, he also invites Jews and Muslims
Pope Francis has announced a day of “fasting, prayer and penance” for peace in the Middle East for Friday 27 October, with an hour of prayer in the evening in St. Peter’s, and invited people to participate, “in the way they deem appropriate” , the faithful of other Christian Churches as well as Jews, Muslims and believers of other faiths. “Brothers and sisters”, said Jorge Mario Bergoglio at the end of the general audience, “war does not solve any problem; it only sows death and destruction; increases hatred; multiply the revenge. War erases the future. I urge believers to take only one side in this conflict: that of peace. But not with words, but with prayer, with total dedication”, the Pope continued: “Thinking about this – he continued – I have decided to call a day of fasting, prayer and penance for Friday 27 October in which I invite you to join , in the way they deem appropriate, the brothers and sisters of the various Christian confessions and those belonging to other religions and those who have peace in the world at heart. In the evening at 6 pm in St. Peter’s we will live an hour of prayer in a spirit of penance to implore peace in our days, peace in this world”. The Pope asked all the Catholic churches in the world to “participate by preparing similar initiatives that involve the people of God”. The Pope recalled, amidst the applause of the faithful present in St. Peter’s Square, “Palestine and Israel”, underlining that “the victims are increasing and the situation in Gaza is desperate: please do everything possible to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe” , he said. “The possible widening of the conflict is worrying while in the world many war fronts are already open: let the weapons be silent, let the cry for peace of the poor, of the people and of the children be heard,” said Francis.
