The first social service in the country, fully dedicated to all-day care for elderly people with dementia, Grizhovnik Social Garden – Burgas, will open its doors to its first 10 users on Monday. In just 2 months from the idea to its realization, today the newest service of the Municipality of Burgas in the social sphere was consecrated and blessed by Father Nikolay.
The opening was attended by the mayor Dimitar Nikolov, the deputy mayor for education, health care, social activities and youth policies Mihail Nenov, the poet Vanyo Valchev and the team of Domashen social patronage, which will take care of the elderly.
“The service is a first for Bulgaria. We ourselves did not expect such a huge interest in her. Therefore, even before we have started, we are already working on expanding the capacity, choosing between several places with a large yard and close to nature”, said the mayor Dimitar Nikolov.
“Thanks to the mayor, who immediately responded to the idea that arose at the end of December, and in less than two months we managed to implement it. We have tried to provide a lot of comfort for people here so that they can feel at ease here. They even started asking us from other cities how we organized the social garden,” added the manager of the Home Patronage, Valentina Stankova.
Assoc. Monika Obreikova – lecturer at the Faculty of Public Health and Health Care at the University “Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov”, expressed readiness to include students in the care of users of the social garden.
The poet Vanyo Valchev, who is a friend of the Domashen social patronage service – Burgas, presented a rare edition of a gramophone record of the band “Tonika”.
The social garden provides opportunities for lunch break and sleep, a space for social contacts in the form of a “Social Cafe”, individual psychological counseling for users and their relatives, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, art therapy, music therapy, outdoor walks with a companion, and if necessary and consultation with a doctor, through a telestation.
The new service will provide a full-day stay for adults over the age of 50 with dementia of various genesis from 08.00 to 17.00. This will enable their relatives to continue to exercise their work without worrying about the risks that accompany their relatives with dementia, as well as reduce the placement in social homes, which creates a feeling of abandonment and forgetfulness of people with age-related dementia.
Under the supervision of specialists and in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, users will engage in useful activities and have the opportunity to expand social contacts. Care for older people with dementia will be provided by psychologists, a rehabilitator and a social worker and will help to slow the progression of dementia, including slowing the deterioration of cognitive, memory, motor skills and emotional state.
