American scientists have revealed that sugary drinks impair memory and learning ability in children.
Researchers from the universities of Georgia and South Africa conducted a series of experiments on mice and found that rodents who ate sugar water at an early age were more likely to have memory problems.
They also found that due to the abundance of sugary drinks, the composition of the animals’ gut bacteria changed, which in turn negatively affected their brain functioning.
Previously, scientists from the Danish University “Aarhus” conducted an experiment on pigs and found that sugar affects the reward system in the brain, like drugs, by releasing neurotransmitters – dopamine and opiates.
They note that the reward system, which is linked to feelings of pleasure, happiness, and well-being, can be activated in other ways, such as through communication or learning.
