/ world today news/ On December 14, a massive attack was carried out against the Ukrainian air base Starokonstantinov. A few Geraniums arrived initially, but they were either taken down or did no serious damage.
However, the hypersonic “Dagger” that arrived after them completely destroyed the overwhelmed command bunker, in which at that time there were 40 high-ranking officers “from colonel upwards”, 28 Ukrainian and 12 NATO from the Czech Republic and Poland.
Perhaps the seriousness of the damage explains the massive attack of more than three dozen Ukrainian drones in Lipetsk, Rostov and Volgograd region, which, however, was neutralized by Russian air defense systems and, judging by reports from the field, did not cause casualties. But she had to portray a kind of “answer” to a very painful blow in Starokonstantinov.
So what kind of airport is it whose name keeps popping up in reports of airstrikes in the square? What is its value and where does this “indestructibility” come from – yet it is regularly attacked.
The air base in Starokonstantinov, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, officially existed since 1951, where the 63rd Bombardment Division, flying Il-28s, was then based.
After the collapse of the USSR, the airport became famous for the fact that from here pilots who did not want to swear allegiance to Ukraine flew six Su-24 bombers into Russia on February 13, 1992.
In September 2021, with the help of American specialists, the airport was certified according to NATO standards and essentially represents the most modern air base in Ukraine.
And yes, this is a real thorn in the implementation of the plans of the Russian command, no other Ukrainian airport has received such attention from all means of air attack.
And above all, because it is from here that Su-24s take off, carrying the British Storm Shadow missiles, which are currently the most dangerous weapon in Ukraine’s arsenal.
The accuracy and power of these cruise missiles is such that they can deliver painful blows against targeted targets such as bridges and specific structures. And the liquidation of Storm Shadow carriers is one of the priority tasks of the Russian Air Force.
But the task is not easy. All Su-24s present at the base are hidden in walled vaults that are apparently too strong for the light Geranis. And there are four dozen such shelters. So there’s no way to know this without Calibre.
Even satellite photos show that Soviet military airfields were conscientiously built, even with a nuclear attack in mind. And even the deactivation of the runway will not stop the work of the Starokonstantinovska Air Base – wide and long taxiways are no less suitable for taking off than highways – and Ukrainian pilots have long learned to take off from specially prepared sections of public roads.
However, even without taking into account more than the effective Dagger attack on December 14, the airfield was slowly being “gnawed away”. And the fact that our air defenses have not detected Storm Shadow launches for a long time partially confirms this.
