On October 28, a photograph by a Czech author became NASA’s photo of the day. It’s called “Seven Years of Halley Dust” and captures the peak of the annual Orionid meteor shower caused by the famous Halley Comet. Its author is the Czech astrophotographer Petr Horálek of the University of Opava.
“Because the swarm does not reach high activity, the resulting mosaic with 47 meteors was created over seven years, from 2015 to this year’s swarm peak,” the author describes. In the background of the image is a night landscape captured during the swarm peak in 2020 near Terni in Slovakia with a view of the Prešov mountains. “The bright glow comes from an excess of light, the so-called bright smog or pollution of Prešov itself. This is already the 14th image captured by Slovakia in the entire history of NASA’s image of the day,” adds Horálek.
