A cultural bet

Ending this Friday afternoon, the Mayor’s Office of Valledupar published news that generates expectations in the cultural sector of Valledupar: the decision was made to buy the property of the old Cesar Theater, after a meeting with the Cultural Parafiscal Contribution Committee.

That yesterday important building in the Historic Center of Valledupar, for the youngest only represents abandonment, bad smells and hermetic doors always closed, but for the older ones it is part of the history of Valledupar for the cultural reference that it once was.

Although the building did not represent much architecturally, nostalgic people say that in the 50s and 60s, long lines were observed at night on Carrera 7 and Calle 15. Children, young people and adults came to the place attracted by the advertisements, altarpieces of wood that they installed in places with high pedestrian flow in the city, where they wrote in large and colorful letters the title and authors of the films of the moment. They went to the most representative theater in Valledupar, the Cesar Theater.

That theater, converted into a symbol of the abandonment of the Cultural Center, may contribute to the revival of the culture and memory of Valledupar. According to reports, once the allocation of the budgetary resource is approved, the Mayor’s Office will get ‘to work’ with the construction of a project, which will have to comply with the requirements demanded by the Ministry of Culture, which in its case must be very flexible and broad since the element was not a cultural asset from the point of view of its antiquity. Likewise, in the same session, they approved the acquisition of a trailer equipped with the necessary elements for artistic presentations.

While waiting for the announcement to materialize, this purchase should only be the beginning of a cultural commitment that has the Historic Center of Valledupar as its protagonist.

Valledupar’s cultural agenda is not empty, but it does need to be filled and organized. And there are already sectors working on it, such as the network of creative industries, made up of different sectors and which was born with the objective of organizing the agenda of cultural, entertainment and even sports events in the city and of strengthening all the protagonists of they. It is an initiative of this newspaper EL PILÓN with the University of the Andean Area, in alliance with all those actors.

THE VALLEDUPAR TREE PLAN

We ask the Mayor’s Office and the Council to identify the need to update the city’s tree plan with good technical and professional rigor. This was formulated in March 2017 and should be a fundamental instrument in the attention of that element of the landscape, better climate, absorption of carbon emissions and home to wildlife, among other functions. In the urban area there are just over 100,000 identified trees. We need to know more about them, about their status; and also with a vision of how to take advantage of more spaces for new trees.

It is also time to remind Emdupar that a part of its income must necessarily be allocated to the reforestation of the basin and it must be ensured that it advances in the upper part.

Tagline. Deserved vallenato tribute to the magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice Aroldo Quiroz; the one surrendered yesterday in his native city of Kings and Caciques.
