A cruel joke with a monument to a great poet. The village of Vrachan decided to make a cardinal change to the monument to Hristo Botev. A self-taught artist and the mayor of the village of Dobrolevo decide to renovate the monument to the revolutionary poet.
But their idea is far from ordinary. And so, in a conversation, the two men came to the conclusion that since Botev had died at the age of 29 and in all the photos that captured his authentic image he had dark hair, they could dye his hair and beard with black paint.
“Only I offer flowers to this monument. We made the change in a day and criticism started on social networks,” said Mayor Pepi Danchev.
The artist also defended his position and stated that he did not see that he had made a mistake.
“Those who criticize us must have graduated from the Sorbonne. When they don’t understand art, I don’t know why they speak out. I don’t see where the desecration of the monument is here. He looked lifelike with black hair and a beard, I think we had improved him,” explained the self-taught artist.
Some of the residents of the village defended their mayor and saw political motives in the criticism.
“A new mayor, a new monument, why didn’t anyone show him filling potholes in the streets alone with a brigade or why they didn’t film him grazing geese in the kindergarten. Children come to play, but they see excrement,” commented a woman from Dobrolevo.
She also explained that many people in the village have expressed support for the change in the monument.
Later, the monument’s black hair and beard were erased and repainted in bronze.
