The crown of the rapper Notorious BIG and love letters from his colleague Tupac Shakur are to be auctioned in New York in September. Sotheby’s announced on Tuesday that it would be the first auction by a major auction house to exclusively focus on hip-hop memorabilia.
For the crown, which Notorious BIG wore shortly before his death in 1997 for a photo that has since become famous, the auction house is hoping to raise up to 300,000 dollars (around 250,000 euros). The piece, signed by the musician, whose real name is Christopher Wallace, has been in the possession of the photographer Barron Claiborne since the picture was taken.
In addition, 22 love letters, which Tupac Shakur wrote to his girlfriend at the time, Kathy Loy, will be auctioned on September 15th. The auction house is hoping for up to 80,000 dollars for the letters of the rapper who was shot in 1996. (apa / dpa)
