“Without a common awareness of the crisis, sooner or later the pressure on the health system will become more serious,” medical doctor Siger Omi warned at a parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday.
The number of new Covid-19 cases registered in Tokyo on Thursday rose for the third day in a row to 3,865. 3,177 new cases of Covid-19 were registered on Wednesday.
Nationwide, 9,576 new cases of Covid-19 were reported nationwide on Thursday, more than 9,000 for the first time, due to the rapid spread of the new coronavirus delta variant.
“Without vaccination, there aren’t many other factors that reduce infection,” Omi said. He acknowledged that the increase in the number of infections was also due to the fact that many citizens were accustomed to the pandemic.
Omi said that the holiday season and the Tokyo Olympics are also contributing factors to the infection.
However, Tokyo Governor Juriko Koike said the increase in infections had nothing to do with the Olympics. She called on young people to be vaccinated, to stay at home and to follow up on Covid-19.
