On Sunday, November 3, the first performance of the musical “Galms” will take place at the “Cēsis” concert hall in Vidzeme [pa]Galmā” – director and actress Rēzija Kalniņa‘s new interpretation of the musical “The Ugly Duckling” by Māras Zālīte and Jānis Lūsēns based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, which was held more than 20 years ago in a theater Liepāja will also be shown in other Latvian cities.
I met Rēzija Kalniņu, the creative team and the musical actors in the director’s creative home – the music and drama room “OratoriO”. This will be real music – with dances, music by Jānis Lūsēns in new arrangements, the ability of the actors, strength and clear singing.
“Court [pa]Galmā” is a self-proclaimed power in a region where the inhabitants of the “house” did not see “beyond the beak”. doubled by two young, promising soloists – LUKA and Lote Voiska.

“Before the production, I did a lot of research on the life of Hans Christian Andersen. He was the illegitimate son of a tall man, whom everyone laughed at because of his appearance. When I read the libretto by Māras Zālīte and his I heard music from Jānis Lūsēns Jr., I realized that I want to speak and tell about those who are mocked,” says director Rēzija Kalniņa.
It might seem like the music is for children, because it’s a fairy tale – cute characters, rats, ducks, squirrel, etc.
