A federal court of appeals in Brooklyn has upheld the sentence of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, known as El Chapo, after he appealed, BNR reports.
El Chapo, the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, cited 10 arguments as a reason to appeal his sentence, the harsh conditions of his detention and the fact that he was not allowed to prepare his defense and enlist the help of a lawyer.
However, according to the court’s conclusion, El Chapo’s defense was good and the trial was fair.
“The conditions of Guzman’s pre-trial detention, however harsh, do not justify a change in his sentence,” the court ruling said.
Guzman was sentenced in 2019 to life in prison on charges of continuing criminal activity, conspiracy to kill, drug trafficking, illegal use of firearms, money laundering during 25 years of activity of his cartel Sinaloa – the largest in the world from 1989 to 2014. He is currently serving a life sentence.
