A Coruña: Researchers rule out the environmental spread of Covid-19 on the Coruña coast | Radio Coruña

The Edar Bens Research Project, which analyzes the presence of covid-19 in wastewater from A Coruña, Arteixo, Cambre, Culleredo and Oleiros, determines that, although genetic material of the virus reaches the plant, it is eliminated before it reaches the sea. They discard, so, its environmental dissemination on the Coruña coast.

Various researchers have analyzed the viral load present in the wastewater and sludge from the Bens treatment plant to know the real evolution of the epidemic, since it collects data from the entire population, including people who have passed COVID-19 without knowing it. In addition, maintaining the sampling over time will allow to be alert to possible spikes.

The project carried out in Edar Bens has been invited to join the Norman European network for scientific research on wastewater to collaborate in a joint study with treatment plants in France, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland and Sweden , among others.

More foams and wipes

The management of Edar Bens has warned that there has been a increase of around 18% per day in the volume of wipes that arrive at the Bens treatment plant since the confinement forced by the COVID-19 pandemic began. They confirm that the presence of foams has multiplied by two in the wastewater of A Coruña and its metropolitan area, ‘a circumstance that is directly linked to the effort to clean and sanitize surfaces that the population is carrying out’.
