A copy of Captain America #1 sold for over $3 million.

The comics market has been on the rise for several months and this recent acquisition of Captain America #1 confirms it.

Like Pokémon cards, some of which can be worth a real fortune, comics today represent a very popular market for collectors. Whether it’s an iconic work of Batman or the very first Marvel comics, some are willing to shell out crazy money for a pop culture treasure.

A cult number, if only by its cover

In the vast catalog of Marvel characters, some heroes are more popular than others, which explains why certain comics are highly sought after. A few months ago, a Spider-Man comic dating from 1984 and which returned to the origins of the famous black suit of the Weaver had for example sold at a colossal price. As we know, Spider-Man is one of the most popular characters and it is no wonder that some of his works can be worth millions of dollars. But another superhero also attracts some covetousness: Captain America. First appearing in 1940, the shield super-soldier is a symbol of America and the Marvel Universe.

And the member of the Avengers has also had epic adventures, starting with his first, which is worth gold. A copy of the first comics Captain America, whose cover is legendary as it shows the superhero knocking out Hitler, fetched more than $3.1 million at auction last week. An acquisition that makes this comic one of the most expensive in the world. This nearly new copy of Captain America #1created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and dating from March 1941, was sold to an anonymous bidder at an event organized by Heritage Auctions.

A great performance, but less impressive than Spider-Man

For “a few” dollars less, this sale makes Captain America #1 fourth most expensive comics sold at auction. The record is currently held by an almost perfect example of Amazing Fantasy #15 from 1962, first introducing the character of Spider-Man. This exceptional sale had already been supervised by Heritage Auctions in 2021, for the modest sum of $3.6 million. The rest of the podium is occupied by Superman, with two copies ofAction Comics #1 (first appearance of the Man of Steel), dating from 1938. This sale perfectly illustrates the soaring prices around comics since, in August 2019, the same comics were estimated at 915,000 dollars, a very different sum from that disbursed last week.
