A controversial statement by President Gustavo Petro leads to debate on insulin use for weight loss in Colombia

After President Gustavo Petro said that while diabetic patients have problems accessing insulin, on behalf of people who are using this drug to lose weight, a statement that the scientific community rejected, the Minister of Health, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo, supported the president ensuring that there are obese patients who use an oral hypoglycemic agent, used by diabetics, to lose weight.

“The intervention that the president made has to do especially with an oral hypoglycemic agent used by diabetics that is now being used for obese patients to lose weight (…) what has happened? We see a very important sale of that medicine, which only changed its name, but we see a purchase of that medicine that is increasing and, on the other hand, then the production of that hypoglycemic agent has been lacking. What the President of the Republic says is absolutely right, medications are being used to control diabetes and they are being used to solve obesity problems,” said Jaramillo.

However, it must be noted that the medication that is used by obese patients to lose weight is Ozempic, an injectable formulated for type 2 diabetes, but which is risky for health.

That statement is supported by the Colombian Association of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, which said that insulin is not a medication that should be used/formulated to lose weight.

“Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease that can lead to other comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, among others, for which multidisciplinary management is required; There are other injectable medications – not insulin – that are currently being used for the management of diabetes and for the management of obesity. In Colombia there is only one injectable medication approved for obesity, which is not insulin therapy.”

For the Colombian Association of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, insulin management requires medical supervision for proper application since if it is not applied correctly it can cause hypoglycemia.

Both the association and Minister Jaramillo assured that there is no shortage of insulin in the country, but rather delays in the dispensing of the medication that will be resolved at the end of this week.
