A Controversial Gift: The Worst Trophy in Sports History

A gift or an appreciation is something we all have a relationship with, whether it’s Christmas, a birthday, a Blur concert or similar. It could be a pair of new panties, or the 30 pieces of silver Judas received according to the Gospel of Matthew. 26:14-25.

But one thing everyone will probably nod in support of: Not all gifts are to taste.

Many thought that Ricardo Ten Argilés should taste it this weekend. The decorated Spanish paracyclist won five medals during the WC in Glasgow, and afterwards he has gone viral.

In addition to the WC gold, the very proof that he is the best in the world, the 47-year-old received a gift from the championship’s main sponsor: the watch company Tissot.

– It is possibly the worst gift in the history of sports, trumpets News.com.au.

As the video shows: Ten Argilés has no forearms. He lost his forearms and left leg after a power line accident when he was eight years old.

That’s why many reacted to him getting a watch.

The video of Ten Argilés receiving the watch has also gone viral, which prompted a number of poor knights to jump on their white horse and ride into Kritikistad on behalf of the Spanish cyclist.

He himself did not raise the alarm. Instead of being resentful, he exudes charm and snapped a video after getting the stage at arm’s length.

An acquaintance had a hand in the game, filming the Spanish star as she asks him what time it is. The 47-year-old shows off the new watch, which is securely placed on his arm, and proudly states:

– It’s world champion time.

Playfully. Elegant. And the response is warm.

– You get a grade of 10 for your sporting achievements, and 100 for your humour, writes a user the cyclist has retweeted.

And that’s how the refrain goes throughout.

Ten Argilés himself also thanks the organizer for taking para-sport seriously, something recent history has repeatedly shown does not happen. For example, it has been a few years since Norwegian Jesper Saltvik Pedersen reacted that he only got a cheese after a World Cup victory in alpine skiing.

– I am very happy with the two watches. There is one for each arm. Most of all, I am happy for what it means for para sports, which is being equated with sport at the highest level, writes the main character.
