A consultation has been launched to define the new face of Bordeaux station

Saint-Jean station, a strategic transit hub in the city of Bordeaux and within the region, will undergo a major renovation project by 2030.

What it will be like Bordeaux Saint-Jean Station tomorrow ? This is the question that the residents of the city of Bordeaux are invited to answer, during the public consultation before the work that started this Monday and will last until October 11. This project is important of the “Bordeaux Grand Station” whose cost could reach 100 million euros, aiming to give this infrastructure a new face by 2030.

Attendance at Bordeaux Saint-Jean station has been growing steadily for 20 years, mainly because the attractiveness of the citythe arrival of the tram in 2003 and the Paris-Bordeaux high-speed line in 2017. After being a major multimodal interchange, the station must change scale to avoid saturation. By 2030, peak-hour ridership is expected to double, then triple with the use of new high-speed lines (from Bordeaux to Toulouse then from Bordeaux to Spain).

According to SNCF Gares & Connexions, the owner of the project, this project has two ambitions: “offer more space for users and make all available modes of transport more accessible”all “adapting to the challenges of climate change”. For this, several ideas have already been put on the table and they could be strengthened with donations, whether for the interior of the station or for the surroundings.

“More fluidity and security”

For the interior of the station, the site plans to resize the ramps and stairs to “Make journeys when trains depart and arrive more smoothly”. The underground link that connects the two halls will be extended and expanded. A footbridge with escalators should also be created, to complete the system for serving the platforms and crossing the tracks safely. The architectural design “the identity of the station will be respected”which is listed in the inventory historical monuments since 1984.

Regarding the surroundings of the station, the project envisages a number of improvements: movement of the tram stationreorganizing bus and coach stops, doubling the capacity of parking for bicycles and creating “real” bus station bringing together all long distance coach stops. It is also possible to register for workshops and a guided tour of the centre. A large public meeting will be organized on September 19 at 6:30 pm at the Théâtre national de Bordeaux in Aquitaine (TnBA). Once the consultation is complete, preliminary project studies will be carried out in 2025, before the first works between 2025-2028 and the main works carried out from 2028 and at least until 2030.
