In February, we reported that the designers planning the route of the S7 road connector and the Northern Ring Road of Krakow did not avoid mistakesthat were noticed by road construction enthusiasts. They indicated, inter alia, that the node was designed without taking into account the traffic volume. According to plans, two main routes were to intersect on the key section of 450 m, which could lead to a “bottleneck” and huge road jams.

Scientists confirm the doubts of enthusiasts
The case became so serious that the investor — General Directorate for National Roads i Highways — asked the Cracow University of Technology to prepare an expert opinion. It turned out that the scientists’ findings coincide with the comments of enthusiasts. As Monika Skrzydlewska from GDDKiA points out in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza”, the analysis showed that the S7-S52 south-west and S52-S7 junctions — south direction must be redesigned. Each of them is to have two lanes in both directions.

The necessity to redesign the Mistrzejowice junction will not only increase these costs, but also postpone the completion date of the entire S7 section. For now, the advancement of design works is 67 percent, and construction works only 1 percent.
Road workers are unlucky with the investment near Krakow. Firstly GDDKiA terminated the contract with the original contractor — a Webuild company that has been building a path at a snail’s pace. The contract was worth one billion zlotys. New contractor — The consortium of Gülermak and Mosty Łódź requested PLN 1.5 billion for the project.
Take a look: It is not only the rising costs that discourage people from obtaining a driving license
GDDKiA will currently manage a network of national roads with a total length of nearly 17.8 thousand. km, including expressways with a length of 3.8 thous. km, which consists of 1.2 thous. km of highways and 2.5 thous. km express roads.
