A comprehensive reform for the Plaza de Barcelos | Radio Pontevedra

The local government awarded the project to reform the Plaza de Barcelos with the aim that it be drawn up by the end of the year, and be able to award the works in 2021.

An architecture studio in Santiago will be in charge of designing the new square in Barcelos, although its editor knows the area well since he lived there for years, according to a press conference by councilor Demetrio Gómez Junquera.

The councilor for works explained that a detailed study of the entire square is already being carried out to undertake a comprehensive reform, which at the moment has NO budget or design. In any case, the local government is clear that it will be a total and costly reform.

As Demetrio Gómez explained, the objective is to reform everything, both the perimeter streets and the part located above the underground parking lot. The idea is to replace the current paving stone with a concrete or asphalt road that facilitates access to the underground car park. The exterior sidewalks will also be expanded to facilitate pedestrian traffic, and parking areas will be enabled for loading and unloading, and for services. The possibility of reducing traffic to a single lane will be studied.

And above the square, it is intended to change the current design, expanding the children’s play area, even changing it; Shaded areas with trees will be created, the Barcelos school will be given more space, and the entire square will be accessible to citizens. Currently, according to the councilor for works, it is underused since only a quarter of its surface is used.

The mayor is also in favor of suppressing the current central kiosk, closed for a long time, and renovating the pedestrian entrances to the underground car park so that the new Barcelos square has a completely different design.

Demetrio Gómez acknowledges that it will be a very expensive project, but that it should be thought about calmly because we are in a particularly sensitive area of the city.
