The expansion of the domestic food e-shop Rohlík to the German market may be threatened by the Dutch chain Picnic, which also focuses on food imports. It is going to expand its operations in Europe, especially in Germany and France. He has already received 600 million euros, roughly 15.2 billion crowns, from investors, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

“We continue to invest in growth and technology to provide the best service. We are proud to be a partner of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and we continue to grow, “said one of Picnic’s founders, Joris Beckers, adding that he expects sales of around one billion euros this year.
According to the latest available records of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, the company reported a loss of 41 million euros from sales of 210 million euros in 2019.
Picnic’s attempt to expand its services to Germany could also be endangered by the domestic e-shop Rohlík, which only expanded to its western neighbor in August this year under the name of the e-shop Knuspr.de. According to the marketing head of the Rohlik Group, Jakub Petřina, Rohlík is not afraid of competition. “The European food market is worth around 2.5 trillion euros, so it is big enough for everyone,” he wrote to the E15 daily.
“Our competitors in Germany are the largest stone supermarkets Rewe and Edeka. There are a lot of players on the online market, but no one has a similar model. We keep our fingers crossed for every player, including Picnic, who will help us speed up the move from the offline world to the online environment, because we are still at the beginning of food shopping, ”he added.

In the last investment round, Rohlík received one hundred million euros, roughly 2.5 billion crowns. It closed the past calendar year with a turnover of over 300 million euros, approximately 7.5 billion crowns, which represents a year-on-year growth of more than one hundred percent.
