A competent summer film with a family feel and white humor

Criticism of I hate summera film directed by Fer García-Ruiz and starring Malena Alterio, Kira Miró, María Botto, Jordi Sánchez, Roberto Álamo and Julián López. Premiering on August 23.

If you are looking for a hobby for the whole family, I hate summer It may be an option. It is an entertaining film that has Two great attractions: a solid cast full of local comedians and a production design that lives up to the circumstances. which makes the most of the locations and does not jar at any point. It has the resources it needs.

As a comedy it is more than simple: it ends in a white humor and no stridency in which there is no room for double meanings or ulterior motives… much less for social criticism. It is a comedy of the feel-good movie which does not intend to bother anyone or generate any kind of debate, simply to please the audience and make them have a good time.

So it’s not going to change anyone’s life, nor is it going to make the audience laugh out loud, but it’s not going to offend or anger anyone either, which is something compared to other comedies.

Accidental Holidays

Three disparate couples book a spectacular summer residence in the Canary Islands: a little paradise in which to enjoy their summer holidays. Of course, what they don’t expect is to coincide with each other… A mistake by the travel agency forces them to live together.

Alonso and Marisa are the most humble and bring their two children with them. He, a street sweeper on sick leave, and she, a tarot reader, love each other madly even though he has an unspeakable secret.

The influencer Vicky and the cosmetic surgeon Dr. Calatrava have two twins whom they don’t pay much attention to and are going through a crisis. They show up there with their Filipino assistant, whom they don’t treat with the slightest humanity.

Finally, Fatima and Torres make up the last couple: they run a delicatessen and have a teenage daughter. They need to disconnect from work and reconnect with their feelings. This chance encounter will force them to collaborate with each other and learn to overcome their problems.

I hate summer It is, of course, a film about coexistence and about the need we have to put ourselves in the shoes of others. It exhibits good values, therefore, although it can be too obvious and saccharine at times. The plot is very chewed up and processed: everything is explained in dialogues so that there are no gaps. There is no need to think.

To a large extent, it is indebted to a somewhat naive humor that seems very obsolete, but has a secret weapon, which is a wildly popular cast that is impossible to faultespecially in the case of the girls: Malena Alterio, María Botto and Kira Miró are good actresses with a magnificent comic vision and they bring to life recognizable characters with whom it is easy to empathize.

It takes a little more time to get used to them, whose evolution remains in the background, although it is a pleasure to see the actor. Mariano Venancio in the role of a good-natured and love-struck grandfather. His story arc may be the most unexpected and entertaining in a nice film that has the potential to engage families and gives each sector its share of prominence.

Having said all of the above, if the screenwriter David Marqués (Championex) would have given the characters a slightly more mischievous twist, we might have been looking at the comedy of the summer. The title has misled us: this time there is no bad vibe involved, just some occasional situations of chaos among the characters and a lack of interest in displeasing the audience.

EVALUATION:

A white comedy with a cast full of good local comedians. It is well-made and watchable, even though it doesn’t have much to tell. It is a competent passing distraction, nothing more.

THE BEST:

It is tastefully shot and has a good cast, in which there is room for all age groups.

WORST:

It has little to tell and it shows. It is pleasant and simple as a feel-good movie, but not particularly funny.
