A coalition looking for solutions for the education budget

NOS news

The government parties are looking for a solution to the debate about the education budget. In the last few days it has become clear that the face wants to stop a large part of the 2 billion euros cut in education.

As the coalition does not have a majority in the Senate, the cabinet is in danger of having the entire education budget rejected. That’s great.

Yesterday the House of Representatives discussed the plans and then the… government parties To the dissatisfaction of the opposition, PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB are still reluctant to take the cuts off the table. But government party leaders are now considering options for changes.

Humility behind the scenes

Behind the scenes it is heard that there is a lot of irritation within the coalition about the process so far. Some believe that the Bruins Minister of Education (NSC) did too little to find a solution, but Bruins himself feels that he has too little room to move.

It is reported that the Minister of Finance Heinen (VVD) has now intervened internally in the debate, looking for other options. Bruins does not want to say much more about it publicly than that “constant discussions are taking place and that he is indeed looking for a solution”.

VAT increase already deleted

If the result comes against the resistance to change the budget, this will be the second time in a short time. Recently the opposition brought changes to the Tax Plan. The most surprising arrangement is that the increase in the VAT on culturemedia and sports will be off the table in 2026.

The House of Representatives approved the original VAT plans and the Senate may soon do so, but the cabinet has promised to look for alternatives to the increase this spring.

The debate on the education budget will continue in the House of Representatives tomorrow. Then Bruins will answer the House.
