a cluster identified at the Saint-Pierre hospital, the population

At least four positive cases have been detected today by the territorial health administration. Three of them are doctors from the François Dunan hospital center, with several dozen contact cases identified.

The archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is once again struck by the coronavirus. More than a month after the last case identified, the health authorities this time identified a cluster (a source of contamination) within the hospital this time. Four positive cases and 65 contact cases have so far been identified. These are two doctors who arrived by plane on Saturday January 16, a doctor from CHFD and his son.

Three of these four cases are asymptomatic and one case is symptomatic out of hospital. Several of these health professionals provided consultations with their masks, which leads health authorities to make decisions within the framework of the precautionary principle.

Hospital staff stay at home

According to the latest information from ATS, several consultations that were to take place at the hospital have already been canceled. Hospital health workers have been asked to stay at home. A crisis meeting took place at the prefecture this late Friday afternoon.

The fifteen practicing physicians currently at CHFD will be tested, as well as their close collaborators, ie around thirty people in all. In addition, from this Friday evening, all hospital staff are invited to limit their social interactions to the strict minimum.

In a second step, from next week, all the hospital staff – just over 300 people – will be the subject of a test campaign.

The population invited to limit social interactions

With regard to the population of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, the authorities invite everyone to “strongly limit“from now on social interactions outside the home. In addition, one of the positive cases attends a terminal class of the Emile Letournel high school. Consequently, the authorities have decided that all the terminal classes will remain closed during the next fortnight.

All social, cultural and sporting events are already canceled as of this Friday evening. This obviously concerns the sporting and cultural events of the weekend.

It should be noted that the prefect has decreed that wearing a mask would again be compulsory in schools in the archipelago for students aged 6 and over from this Monday and until further notice.

Thierry Devimeux will be the guest of the Saint-Pierre et Miquelon newscast on the 1st of this Friday, January 22.
