The disease is a hereditary condition that originated, and often occurs, in Katwijk aan Zee. People who carry the gene often suffer from the age of 45 from a protein that sticks to a blood vessel in the brain, causing the blood to accumulate. Resulting in dementia or cerebral haemorrhages. Most people with the disease die sooner or later from the condition. “Contrary to popular belief, the disease has absolutely nothing to do with inbreeding,” explains Neuroradiologist Mark van Buchem of the LUMC in the NOS Radio 1 Journaal.
