A clergyman, a Greek citizen, was shot in the abdomen while the lock on his church door was closed, a police spokesman told AP. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The attacker was armed with a hunting rifle and acted alone.
Police have blocked the church neighborhood and warned people not to approach it.
The reasons for the attack are unknown. This came at a time of tension in France over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, two weeks after an Islamic extremist had beheaded a French teacher who had shown such cartoons to pupils in a free speech class, and two days after a knife in Nice. An armed man in Our Lady’s Basilica killed three people, with one victim cutting his throat.
France The counter-terrorism services are not investigating Saturday’s attack, but the interior minister has instructed a special task force to follow the case until the shooter is captured.
Meanwhile, French Prime Minister Jean-Castex has reaffirmed that the government is going to deploy military security at schools and churches.
