A city walk draws attention to the fight against breast cancer

October 1st is the world day of the fight against breast cancer, around which a lot of program series have been built in recent years so that their message reaches as many women as possible. Székesfehérvár did the same, where they have been organizing joint walks in the city center for more than a decade. This year, October 7 was set as the date of the event, which Annamária Östör, advisor for health, sports and social sustainability, said at the press conference held on Wednesday:

– I am confident that this year we will be able to do the walk with many participants, thereby showing the importance of our goal and our support for those involved. It is a special pleasure that the sportsmen of our city do the same, basketball players, hockey players, American football players and handball players have been walking with us for years.

At the press conference, Erika Krisztián, Chief Medical Officer of Fejér County, also emphasized the importance of prevention, one of the important tools of which, in addition to self-examination, is the mammography examination, which can already indicate the early stage of the disease, thereby promoting full recovery.

– The age group most affected are women between the ages of 45 and 65, for whom the most important thing is regular self-examination and screening. It is a sad experience that less than 40 percent of this age group only attend screening tests. In other words, only 4 out of 10 women give themselves the chance for early detection and full recovery – explained the chief medical officer, from whom we also learned that about 5,000 new breast cancer patients are diagnosed in Hungary every year and about 2,000 of them die of the disease.

He also touched on the fact that women between the ages of 45 and 65 are the most affected, but younger, older people and 1 percent of men can also be affected by this type of cancer.

Finally, László Keresztury, the professional manager of the Health Development Office in Székesfehérvár, explained the course of the October 7 program. As he said, before and after the walk, the mammography assistants will be on site – at the Országalma – with whom you can request an appointment, and if someone requests it, they will also provide information about the course of the examination. As for the walk itself, after the welcome speeches at 10 a.m., the participants will start across Fő utca to Mátyás Király körút, then to Liszt Ferenc utca and finally to Városház tér.

Walkers will also receive a symbolic pink ribbon and biodegradable, environmentally friendly balloons on the spot.
