A city, a book

A year ago now, as if it were a previous life, the coronavirus pandemic took away the celebration of Day of the book and of what should be the 50th edition of the Malaga Book Fair. With the corresponding de-escalation advanced, on the following July 24, with no little fear in the body and as an attempt, a particular and postponed Book Day was held in Malaga that served to put to the test what should have been the new and brand-new headquarters of the Book Fair: the Alameda Principal, already (or almost) finished his deep facelift. The meeting, with its stalls, its signatures and its roses, in the purest style Saint George, left good sensations and served to recover sadly withered essences shortly before. The following November, in order to prolong the pull and also discarded the celebration of the Book Fair in autumn, the City Council launched the first edition of the Malaga Book Fair, perhaps a new reduced version of what should have been the Book Fair, with a local accent but the same disposition to celebrate literature in the street. The proposal was a great success, it left readers and booksellers happy and confirmed that the Alameda Principal is, certainly, the perfect location for meetings around books and in the open air in Malaga. With an eye on the evolution of the pandemic, the city is preparing to celebrate the imminent anniversary of Book Day again in the Alameda, with two days to share the next 23 and 24 days and with the ingredients that can be expected (presentations, signatures, readings and the participation of Malaga bookstores with their positions) of a similar appointment. Thus, if time permits, the party around books will once again exercise its particular comfort.

In this way, and as appropriate, the different institutions have prepared their respective programs of events to be developed in these two days, with special incidence on the 23rd. Thus, the Andalusian Center of Letters will host at its headquarters on Álamos street a poetic reading by the Andalusian Author of the Year, the Malaga poet Emilio Prados, by the actors Jose Carlos Cuevas Y Paco Inestrosa. The Rafael Pérez Estrada Foundation will hold in the Alameda the same day a collective reading of the Manifesto for reading from Irene Vallejo In which Malaga writers and personalities of the city linked to the world of books will participate. The Provincial Council has also indicated on the agenda several activities in this regard: on the 23rd, the María Victoria Atencia Provincial Cultural Center will host a new meeting of the Philosophy and Thought cycle from the hand of the writer Juan Jacinto Muñoz Rengel, while on the 24th the Cánovas del Castillo Library will begin a new edition at street level of its literary routes by Malaga. There will be no shortage of options, then, for the injured letter.

But we will have to wait, for now, for the 50th edition of the Malaga Book Fair: sources from the organization confirmed that dates are being considered for the next month of October, with which the contest is given a deadline for a greater normalization of activity to the extent that the containment of the epidemic allows it. The decision is in line with other cities that have decided to postpone their respective fairs for those dates: Granada has already confirmed that it will develop its next edition from October 1 to 10, while that of Sevilla It will take place from the 7th to the 17th of the same month. In the case of MadridAlthough the month of June was originally proposed, there will finally be a Book Fair in Retiro from September 10 to 26. The reasons pointed out in any case for not holding the book fairs in their usual spring watchtower have to do with a forecast that still points to difficult weeks regarding the pandemic, with restrictions and perimeter closures on account of the fourth wave that would hinder any organization at the height. Of course, there are those who have decided to take the step and anticipate events: the Seville Book Fair of Tomares, one of the most prominent on the Andalusian map, closes its twelfth edition this Sunday after having received some of the most prominent authors of contemporary Spanish narrative. Also Alicante It plans to hold its first Book Fair organized by the Malaga agency before the summer Makyre Events. Meanwhile, there is Book Day in Malaga spring. And the priceless company of reading as a consolation in the face of such decidedly adverse times.

The Radical Book Fair is born from the hand of Suburbia

For the first time, Malaga will have an alternative Book Fair to the official one: the first Radical Book Fair It will be held on the 24th from 12:00 at Lagunillas with presentations, readings, fanzines and “critical editorial” posts. The initiative was born from the new Malaga bookstore Suburbia, which will celebrate its inauguration the day before, on the 23rd, at its headquarters in the same neighborhood of Lagunillas (C / Ana Bernal, 4). Suburbia presents itself as an associative bookstore “specialized in critical thinking, political philosophy, (trans) feminisms, LGTBIQ +, anti-racism and movements.”
