A Cinematic Escape: Burying Ashes in the South Nancy Cemetery’s Cinerary Forest

A cinerary forest at the South Nancy cemetery

In Nancy, a new possibility of eternal rest soon offers itself: burying one’s ashes at the foot of a tree. This innovative option will soon be offered at the southern cemetery.

A small cinerary forest, established this spring, will open its doors to visitors next December. Nancy stands out as one of the first large cities in France to offer this alternative.

Currently, the area looks more like a collection of mature trees and saplings, spanning 6,000 m2 of greenery. It is necessary to give nature time to select the specimens that will thrive, some taking root while others will disappear. Yannick Andrès, head of the tree heritage service, estimates that after 10 to 15 years, around 250 trees will have been able to flourish. At the foot of these beeches, elms, maples, larches, birches, and other species, the ashes of the deceased will soon have the opportunity to be deposited in the humus of a cinerary forest, reports L’Est Republicain.

The planting is still recent, but some trees are already ready to accommodate the first urns.
