Little Milaán Michel Navarro Reinoso, who was waiting for a liver transplant in Santiago de Cuba, died this Monday, May 6, after a tough battle with his health.
The little boy suffered from liver cirrhosis with atresia of the bile ducts, and his case went viral a few months ago, when last November the Cuban activist Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia spread it asking for help.
Now, the news of little Milaán’s death was announced by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who detailed that the little boy would have turned 2 years old on May 30.
The communicator had reported a few days ago that the child was in critical condition, and that he was admitted to the Sur Children’s Hospital, better known as La Colonia, with a “reserved prognosis.”
When announcing the minor’s hospitalization, Mayeta Labrada cited the testimony of the child’s father, who indicated that Milaán had been hospitalized for 12 days, but that in the last 72 hours he had been transferred to intensive care due to bleeding.
The little boy’s father explained that his situation became complicated when, in addition to bile duct atresia and liver cirrhosis, the minor also presented Hepatoammoniacal Encephalopathy, which in the end he could no longer overcome.
The little boy waited more than 6 months for the urgent transplant he needed. When Salcedo announced the case, he explained that the minor’s mother had been told that in Cuba they did not have what was necessary to perform the surgical intervention, so it was never performed.
The case of Milan thus joins the long list of Cubans who die waiting for treatment not available on the Island, which despite everything continues to promote itself abroad as a “medical power.”
The lack of equipment, furniture and ambulances, as well as basic supplies such as surgical thread, anesthesia and antibiotics, make even minor health problems in Cuba a nightmare for the sick and injured, a situation noticeably aggravated for patients with serious illnesses. or chronic.
In the case of Milaán, after learning of his death, thousands of Cubans joined the networks in condolences for the family, regretting that this was the outcome of his story.
