A child of a same-sex family will take a Bulgarian birth certificate with “mother” and “mother A”

The two women were on trial in Strasbourg.

A child of a same-sex family will receive a Bulgarian birth certificate, in which the names of his two mothers will be entered, BNT reported. Today, the Sofia City Administrative Court overturned the refusal of the Pancharevo district of Sofia to issue the child’s document.

The decision comes after the two women filed a lawsuit in Strasbourg and the court there ruled against the decision of the Pancharevo region.

The child was born in Spain in 2019. In the birth certificate of the girl, the parents are listed as “mother A” and “mother”.

In Bulgaria, however, the couple met with a refusal from the institutions to issue a Bulgarian birth certificate.

The case before the Administrative Court was initiated on a complaint of the Bulgarian mother against the refusal of the municipality to issue a birth certificate. According to the defendant – Sofia Municipality, Pancharevo district, the entry in the birth certificate of two female parents as mothers of the child is inadmissible, as same-sex marriages in Bulgaria are currently inadmissible and such registration would be contrary to public order.

The decision of the Administrative Court may be appealed.
