A Chechen has been sentenced to life in Austria for killing a Chechen dissident

Umarov, 43, who received political asylum in Austria in 2005 and lived there under the name of Martin Beck, was found dead on July 4, 2020 with gunshot wounds near Vienna.

Former Chechen police officer Umarov ran a video blog criticizing Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic, and collaborated with the Austrian intelligence service.

His killer, who is described only as a 48-year-old Chechen man, was at the time of his arrest with the victim’s blood on his left leg and the marks of gunpowder on his hands, investigators said.

The accused did not plead guilty in a lawsuit in a court in the city of Korneiburg and promised to appeal the verdict.

The motive for the crime has not been clarified, but prosecutors have alleged that it is linked to an unsuccessful arms trade deal or a political assassination.

Umarov had testified in other murder trials involving the Chechens.
