Adel Imam was born into a poor peasant family on May 17, 1940 in the Sayeda Aisha neighborhood in Cairo.[1] But the family’s origins go back to the village of Shah, Mansoura Center, Dakahlia Governorate. Adel Imam mentioned that he loved his mother very much, and was deeply affected by her death.
His father, Muhammad Imam, was religious. He worked as a “chief” in the police.[1] His father passed away in 1997, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.[12] Adel Imam has a brother and two sisters, his brother is the producer Issam Imam, and his two sisters are Iman and Mona,[13] Also, the artist Mustafa Metwally is his son-in-law, as he is married to his sister, Iman Imam.[1]
In his childhood, Adel moved with his family from Al-Sayeda Aisha neighborhood to Al-Helmeya neighborhood, then Al-Omraniya neighborhood in Giza, then Al-Mohandessin, then Al-Mansouriya.[1] Adel studied at Helmeya School, then moved to Benbagadan Secondary School, and then to El Morcos Secondary School in Alexandria, after completing his schooling stage; Adel Imam joined the Faculty of Agriculture at Cairo University, and began his artistic career on the Cairo University stage, including work in theater and cinema, where he had participated in the play Me, He, and She (1963) while he was in the third year at the university.[14
