One of the surprises of the local elections this year was the change after 20 years of governance of the Kardzhali municipality to Hassan Aziz. However, DPS remain in power there after Errol Mümün won the local elections in the first round.
One of the people who started the work of both the municipality and the DPS party in the region, the journalist Ilhan Anday commented to bTV that Hassan Aziz has accumulated a lot of mistakes over time and was surrounded by plasterers. There have also been scandals surrounding companies and public procurement.
“Hassan Aziz has accumulated negatives. Back in August, we wrote that there would be a big and small surprise in Kardzhali region. Hassan Aziz did not listen and did something very expensive and large-scale like an election campaign. He was also with the Pope, invited a megastar from Turkey. He was preparing for a sixth term, but Hasan Aziz did not have a lobby in Sofia. He did not know what information was flowing to Ahmed Dogan. And all this came as a super surprise for him, but not for us,” he commented.
“There is hope for more money from the central government for Kardzhali, work will be done in sync between Kardzhali and Sofia. DPS will be a factor in the executive branch. The expectations are that all the negatives accumulated in recent years will be overcome,” said Ilhan Anday.
“During the management of GERB, there was animosity between GERB and DPS at local level and it reflected on funds for infrastructure and social activities. The regional city was a loser. Between Hasan Aziz himself and Mustafa Karadai, there is a competition since the youth of DPS, which Karadai has always won. There was a project at the time for him to be a youth leader, and then he stepped on other springboards. If the start for Hassan Aziz had been different, now the chairman of the DPS could not be Karadai, but Hassan Aziz,” Ilhan Anday pointed out.
“This reflects on the governance in Kardzhali – for tens of thousands, not only for the city, but also for the villages,” he added.
Ilhan Henday also commented that the co-chairman of the DPS Delyan Peevski had a key role in the vote in Kardzhali – he was on the ground in key municipalities for the party and the result was achieved.
“DPS are the modest winners in these elections – on the basis of set and fulfilled goals, they make a breakthrough, take back the municipality,” he declared. “The Peevski strategy injected oxygen into the arteries of the electoral DPS”, Henday also pointed out.
