A Challenging Rescue Mission: International Team Saves Dickey from Complex Cave System

In total, more than 150 people from several international organizations joined the rescue team to help Dickey get out of the cave, which he was unable to do on his own due to pain and weakness.

While the medics treated Dickie, cave experts began to wonder how to get the man out of the extremely complex and deep cave system.

A difficult rescue operation

The Morka cave system has many narrow bends, branches, turns and slopes, making it a difficult research object for any expert, even in good health. An expedition through this cave system could be likened to climbing Everest.

“Even under ideal conditions, it takes 15 hours for an experienced cave explorer to reach the surface,” revealed the Turkish Speleology Federation.

A group of experts from Turkey, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy and Poland divided the cave system into parts, with a separate team assigned to each.

A demolition team had to be called in at several very tight spots to get Dickie out on a stretcher. They also had to set up several campsites to keep a constant eye on Dickie and everyone could rest along the way.

The situation was complicated by the limited possibilities of communication between the underground and surface rescuers. According to the Associated Press, runners were used to travel from the camp where Dickey was located to a location on the ground where telephone communications were possible.

In many places, stones were falling from the ceiling of the cave.

The rescue mission to get Dickie out of the cave began on Saturday, September 9, with him being passed from one team to the next. After three days of work, the international cave rescue team successfully brought Dickie to safety on Tuesday, September 12 at 00:37 local time.
