The VMRO student organization in Plovdiv launched a challenge to the people of Plovdiv with banners on the eve of Popular Awakening Day – November 1st. At key points in the city, the question stands out from the banners: “Primer or pumpkin?”
The president of the young voivodes, Vasil Ganchev, explained the action with a comment on the organization’s social media page:
“The battle today is between the native and the foreign. Between buying your child a book for November 1st or a pumpkin and a costume for Halloween. We live in times when multiculturalism and the global world are revered. However, , this is a double-edged sword because we are losing our identity. We don’t care that no one celebrates the holidays, but before we honor others we must know and respect our native festivals and traditions because they have kept us who we are.
There’s nothing wrong with kids having fun without Halloween, but the scary thing is they don’t know what the next day will be like. We respect a foreign tradition and forget the Bulgarian one. November 1st is a holy date on which we honor all the awakeners of the people who have given their whole life for the cause of Bulgaria’s survival. These are the people we need in these difficult times. From people who are ready to sacrifice themselves and work for Bulgaria to be alive, not people who carve pumpkins.
One shouldn’t be at the expense of the other, if it is, today’s date is far more important than anything else. We should know at least some of the works of the educators of the people, thanks to whom we can proudly call ourselves Bulgarians. Therefore, before buying a Halloween costume for your child, tell him about the exploits of Botev, Vazov, Levski and the hundreds of known and unknown Bulgarian vigilantes. Let’s make sure Bulgaria has it too tomorrow!
Happy holiday!
Happy National Leaders Day! ”
