A CEPEO school named in honor of the First Nations | Education | News | The right

After announcing last week thata new secondary school in the Barrhaven sector would bear the name of the ardent defender of the Francophonie Pierre de Blois, who died in 2017, the Council of Public Schools of Eastern Ontario (CEPEO) lifted the veil on Thursday on the new name for Ottawa West Elementary School, which welcomes 250 students in the Nepean sector.

The building will henceforth bear the name of Mamawi public elementary school, the organization announced in a virtual ceremony.

Originally from both Mohawk and Anishnabe, the word Mamawi means “All together in creation.”

Consultation

This name was chosen following consultations with the school community and representatives of the First Nations, it was indicated.

“I am delighted with the choice of the name Mamawi. This pays tribute to the philosophy of the First Nations and fits perfectly into the educational mission of the school, inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which places the child at the center of the learning process, by encouraging him to let yourself be guided by your natural curiosity that values creativity and the arts, ”says CEPEO Director of Education Sylvie Tremblay.
