Edward Graham, chief operating officer for Samaritan’s Purse, visited Rolling Fork, Mississippi, on August 3 to celebrate new homes provided by Samaritan’s Purse for families who lost their homes in the storms.
“This is not just a gift from Samaritan’s Purse. It is from the church, the body of Christ,” Edward told Elijah Washington. “We go and provide relief after the storms, but we also help rebuild communities.”
Washington was home when the storms hit. He ran to the tub for protection.
“I put on my boots and took a lamp because I knew it would get dark and I would be scared,” he said. “Then I heard the noise and I said, ‘Sir, here it is.’ I put a pillow over my head and in a moment it was over. When I shined the lamp, there was nothing. I got out of the tub and walked outside because there was no longer a house”.
Washington is one of 40 residents who will receive a replacement home from the Samaritan’s Purse rebuild program in Mississippi. This includes small family homes and manufactured units, reinforced against wind and debris during bad weather. Washington’s nephew, an active duty member of the military, joined the family; His visit was a pleasant surprise.
Michelle Larry and her family were also blessed with a new home “paid for in full” through the rebuild program.
“When you ask God for something, you don’t know how it’s going to come,” Larry said, checking out his new home with his family and Edward. “I did not imagine that he would give me this blessing.”
Edward gave a Billy Graham Study Bible to Larry and his family, and explained to them about the special notes it contains written by his grandfather Billy Graham.
“We thank the Samaritan’s Purse family for blessing us with this new home,” Larry told Edward. “It blesses us to see others help. This has exceeded my expectations. This is more than I expected.”
