ANKARA (Sputnik) – The governor of the Turkish province of Bartin, Sinan Guner, said that four sailors were killed in the shipwreck of the bulk carrier Arvin in the Black Sea, off the coast of Turkey.

“According to the latest data, six people have been saved, four bodies have been found; we are forced to suspend the rescue operation due to unfavorable weather conditions, which had caused the shipwreck,” Guner told the NTV channel.

Shortly before Guner claimed that the thirteen crew members of the wrecked bulk carrier they are ukrainian and not Russians, as it had previously communicated.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed that 10 Ukrainian citizens were on board the sunken cargo ship Arvin off the coast of Turkey.

“The ship Arvin sank off the coast of Turkey with 10 Ukrainians and two foreigners on board,” wrote the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko on his Twitter account.

According to the diplomat, “six people were rescued, two died. The search and rescue operation of four sailors continues.”

The statement specified that “the Ukrainian consuls went to the port of Bartin to provide their assistance.”

The Turkish coast guard service informed Sputnik that of the 12 crew members of the freighter Arvin two were russian citizens, the death of one person was confirmed, six crew members were rescued.

“In total, there were 12 people on the dry cargo ship, two of them Russian. The different death toll may be due to the fact that the weather conditions in the area are very adverse. We can confirm the death of one person with certainty, we have his body, “said the source of the agency.

Meanwhile, the press attache of the Russian embassy in Turkey, Maria Kasimova, told Sputnik that several employees of the consular department of the diplomatic mission went to the port of Bartin to offer their help.

According to the Vesselfinder and Fleetphoto websites, the Arvin bulk carrier was built in 1975, used the Russian flag until 1992, and subsequently sailed under the flags of Bulgaria, Cambodia and, since 2016, Palau.

The company Arvin Shipping is indicated as the owner of the ship.

On January 2, the bulk carrier left the port of Poti, in Georgia, bound for Burgas, in Bulgaria, and on the 15th it made a stop at the Turkish port of Bartin, according to information from another portal specialized in maritime transport, Marinetraffic.
