A cargo ship sank in the Black Sea

A Turkish cargo ship with a crew of 12 sank yesterday off the Turkish Black Sea coast in a storm, authorities were unable to contact the crew, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said today, quoted by Reuters.

The captain of the Turkish-flagged Kafkametler reported yesterday morning that the ship was drifting towards a breakwater off Eregli, in Turkey’s northwestern Zonguldak district, the district governor’s office said earlier.

Yerlikaya said the ship sank after hitting the breakwater.

The area was hit by heavy storms yesterday. The district governor’s office said bad weather prevented air assets and marine vessels from conducting a search.

Yerlikaya told reporters that search and rescue operations will begin as soon as weather conditions improve.
