Michael Jackson’s family, celebrities and fans attended the world premiere of the documentary This Is It, which was made during rehearsals for the star’s big London tour that never took place.
The concert film was assembled from nearly 100 hours of footage shot during 4 months of rehearsals for the return of the King of Pop, the BBC reported. The Los Angeles screening took place with simultaneous premieres in 18 other cities, but nowhere were there as many stars in one place as at the venue in the City of Angels.
In addition to Michael Jackson’s brothers – Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Randy, a bunch of other stars walked the red carpet, including Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Love Hewitt and the founder of “Motown” Barry Gordon Jr. Also there was the director of the film and of the tour itself, Kenny Ortega, who described it as “the last sacred document of our guide and friend”. The hall was also filled with devoted fans of the star, who after seeing the film said that the live concert would have been something never seen before.
Michael Jackson died on June 25, just 2 weeks before the start of the tour, which turned out to have its detractors. Fans also gathered in front of the premiere hall, protesting against the organizing company AEG for putting pressure on the singer to perform so many concerts despite his deteriorating health.
On the red carpet, Jermaine Jackson emphasized that the shots were from rehearsals and that’s why his brother didn’t give his best to them, but surely on stage in front of his fans he would have given 100%, as he always did.
The film will be shown in thousands of theaters worldwide, but only for two weeks. By the end of this week, it will be available in 110 countries. Its earnings are expected to make it one of the highest grossers of this year.
