The first Bulgarian woman arrested during an action by the European Prosecutor’s Office. This is Sofka Bozhilova from Peshtera. The action, carried out in several countries, is a signal of misuse of 13 million euros, which damaged the budget of the European Union.
The Plovdiv Court of Appeals remanded her in custody, and the news surprised people in her hometown.
Sofka Bozhilova, 32, was detained in late October, along with 10 others from Bulgaria, Germany and Italy, for tax evasion by companies exporting cars.
A few years ago, Sofka was married to an Italian, but returned to Peshtera, where she lived with her new husband and young child until her arrest. The house was empty today.
Sofka is known to have been a candidate for municipal councilor in her hometown 10 years ago. Then she went to Italy and this ended her attempt at a political career, BNT reported.
By decision of the Court of Appeal in Plovdiv, it is a measure of restraint “detention in custody”.
