a bug allows applications to geolocate you

In its new iOS 16.3 update, Apple reveals that a bug in Apple Maps allowed certain applications to geolocate you without requiring your authorization.

Apple has just updated its iOS mobile operating system to the new version iOS 16.3. In the press release indicating new features and security bug fixes, Apple notably indicated that a flaw in the Apple Maps application had been identified. This flaw consisted in allowing certain applications to be able to bypass Apple Maps privacy clauses in order to easily get your iPhone’s geolocation or iPad without even needing your prior permission.

On the other hand, this iOS 16.3 update also includes several new features, such as end-to-end encryption of data stored in iCloud or compatibility made possible with FIDO security keys. In addition, classic updates on overall performance have also been made to optimize the use of smartphones and tablets.

A new flaw among many others that can raise questions

Privacy settings are one of the most important data regarding the use of applications because privacy is an indisputable fact. However, this update has something to embarrass Apple about Apple Maps and this security flaw. Applications that could exploit this security flaw could thus obtain your exact location whenever they wanted, which violates privacy rules.

Apple’s report indicates the details regarding this flaw named CVE-2023-23503. The devices affected are iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad Mini 5th generation and later.

According to a Brazilian journalist specializing in Apple devices, Rodrigo Ghedin, he claims that this security flaw has necessarily already been exploited once by an application. He relies in particular on the claims of a reader who claims that the most popular delivery application in Brazil managed to follow him constantly while he had the iOS version 16.2 on his iPhone.
