Fertility treatments seem to have no limits. So much so that the possibility of a baby being born with its deceased mother would be approaching. How is it possible?
In Great Britain a woman waged a legal battle, which went as far as the London Court of Appeal, in order to becoming a mother-grandmother to the frozen eggs of her daughter, who died of colon cancer.
The 60-year-old woman – who asked to remain anonymous – wants to give birth to her grandson at a fertility clinic in the United States, but first needs to end a controversial dispute with the English health authorities.
After a long fight against cancer, the lady’s daughter died at the age of 28. Her desire to be a mother was so great that she had frozen her eggs. But now, after five years of being frozen, they run the risk of deteriorating, therefore, her mother is asking for them to be fertilized so that she can give birth to her grandson.
The petition led to a controversial judicial process between the woman, the Human Embryo Fertilization Authority (HFEA) and the Judiciary. Throughout the litigation, the lady argued that the assisted reproduction decision was made by mutual agreement with her daughter before she died, who also authorized her mother to be in charge of caring for the “much loved” baby, once born. .
Now the appellate court has ordered the HFEA to reconsider the woman’s request, who would be getting closer to fulfilling her purpose of having fertility treatment.
