A British Woman Challenges Outdated Austrian Citizenship Laws

Before 1983, women could not pass on Austrian citizenship to their children – if they were married. This regulation is outdated, but still applies to descendants. A British woman now wants to challenge this.

It was New Year’s Day 2023 when Joanna Rahim decided to challenge the Austrian state. Like every year, the Brit was watching the Vienna New Year’s concert on television when she was overcome by fighting spirit. “God damn, I’m gonna do something about it!” – I’ll do something about it – she thought to herself in her London living room. At least that’s what the 56-year-old said in an interview six months later.
